Urbana flipped the game in less than five minutes.
Trailing Westminster 21-13 late in the fourth quarter, the Hawks scored 18 unanswered points to pull out a dramatic 31-21 victory and improve to 2-0.
Quarterback Kiegan Rupinta sparked the comeback from one of the worst possible starting points: Urbana’s own 1-yard line.
After creating some breathing room with a short completion, Rupinta hit Spencer Fisher for an 89-yard touchdown that immediately changed the game.
Urbana’s defense then forced a three-and-out.
A holding penalty wiped out a 56-yard punt return and pushed the Hawks back to their own 10, but Rupinta responded again, this time connecting with Nick Hallowitz for a 48-yard touchdown.
Rupinta finished with 282 passing yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 98 yards and another score.
The final blow came from Devin Urbina, who intercepted a Westminster pass and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown with 2:01 left. It was the first pick-six of his career.
The comeback carried extra emotion after Urbana player Stefan Behrsing suffered a serious arm injury while returning the opening kickoff of the second half and was taken away by ambulance.
Urbina said afterward that the game and his pick-six were for Behrsing.
WHAT IT MEANS
Urbana showed it can recover when a game starts slipping away.
The Hawks overcame mistakes, poor field position and a late deficit without panicking, and Rupinta’s ability to create explosive plays gives Urbana an increasingly dangerous offense.
