HERE'S WHAT WE KNOW

Urbana beat Frederick 34–12, improved to 13–0 and won its first girls flag football regional title. Tyler and Holt each returned an interception for a touchdown. Gomez caught two touchdown passes, and Tyler added a receiving score. Urbana advances to the state quarterfinals. Frederick finished 9–3, with Wallace throwing two touchdown passes to Henson.

Urbana’s girls flag football team captured its first regional championship Tuesday night, defeating Frederick 34–12 at home to remain unbeaten at 13–0.

Senior Kayla Tyler set the tone on the game’s second play, intercepting a pass and returning it for a touchdown, according to The Frederick News-Post. Coach Michael Warner credited film preparation and Tyler’s recognition of the play.

The victory in the Class 4A–3A West Section I regional final sends Urbana to the state quarterfinals. The Hawks’ next opponent was still to be determined through reseeding when the supplied report was published.

Tyler later added an offensive touchdown, catching an 11-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Emily Mitchel early in the fourth quarter.

Kieryn Gomez caught two touchdown passes from Mitchel, and sophomore Delaney Holt delivered Urbana’s second interception return for a score with 9:23 remaining.

The Hawks separated themselves with 20 unanswered points in the second half, turning a competitive game into a decisive victory.

Frederick had answered Urbana’s early advantage when senior quarterback Da’Myra Wallace found junior receiver Rosie Henson for a 22-yard touchdown with 7:22 left in the second quarter. That brought the Cadets within 14–6.

Even after the outcome was settled, Frederick made one last connection. Coach Rob Dixon called timeout with one second remaining to give Wallace a final play in her high school career. She found Henson for a 20-yard touchdown.

Henson finished with nine receptions for 111 yards and both Frederick touchdowns. Wallace completed 26 of 50 passes for 237 yards and two scores.

Dixon said Wallace accumulated more than 2,500 passing yards and over 1,000 rushing yards during her Frederick career. He praised her character and the teammates who worked to help her finish with a positive final play.

The Cadets ended their season at 9–3.

For Urbana, the regional crown adds to a run that already includes two Frederick County Public Schools championships since girls flag football became a varsity sport five years ago, according to the report.

Tyler credited the Hawks’ success to connection, shared preparation and making sure teammates are ready when called upon. That cohesion now carries Urbana into the next round with its unbeaten record intact.

WHAT IT MEANS

Urbana has secured a regional championship, not yet a state title. The Hawks move forward unbeaten, while Frederick’s season closes with a strong final passing performance from Wallace and Henson.
