I-70 Golf Range permanently closes as Frederick cricket stadium plans move forward
The longtime golf range along East Patrick Street has closed as plans continue advancing for a proposed professional cricket stadium at Frederick’s Gateway Property.

I-70 Golf Range along East Patrick Street has permanently closed. A professional cricket stadium is proposed at the Gateway Property. Frederick City Council voted 5–1 on August 6 to rezone 24.33 acres. The zoning changed from General Commercial to Institutional for a Special Events Center. The zoning could allow a venue of up to 25,000 seats. Washington Freedom’s current concept calls for approximately 10,000 seats. That concept includes roughly 5,000 fixed seats and 5,000 lawn seats. The stadium still requires additional design, permitting, transportation and implementation approvals before construction can begin.
I-70 Golf Range along East Patrick Street in Frederick has permanently closed, marking another visible change at the Gateway Property as plans for a proposed professional cricket stadium continue to move forward.
The stadium proposal has been in development for more than a year. Plans for a cricket venue at the Gateway Property were first publicly discussed in April 2025, and the project has since taken another major step through the city’s rezoning process.
On August 6, the Frederick City Council voted 5–1 to rezone 24.33 acres of the Gateway Property from General Commercial to Institutional for a Special Events Center.
The new zoning could allow a venue with as many as 25,000 seats. Washington Freedom’s current concept, however, calls for a smaller stadium of approximately 10,000 seats, including about 5,000 fixed seats and another 5,000 lawn seats.
The rezoning approval does not mean stadium construction is beginning immediately.
The proposed venue still must move through additional design, permitting, transportation and other implementation steps before construction could move forward.
With I-70 Golf Range now permanently closed, the property is entering another stage of transition as the cricket stadium proposal continues through the development process.
Everything Frederick will continue following the project as additional plans, approvals and construction details are released.
WHAT IT MEANS
The closing of I-70 Golf Range is another major physical change at a property that could eventually become one of Frederick’s largest sports and entertainment developments.
The rezoning moves the stadium proposal forward, but the project is not yet at the construction stage. Several additional approvals and planning steps remain before the final shape and timeline of the project become clear.
