Frederick County, Virginia opposes Valley North transmission line headed toward Maryland
Officials in Frederick County, Virginia have formally opposed a proposed 765-kilovolt transmission line that would run from West Virginia through Virginia and toward Frederick County, Maryland.

Frederick County, Virginia, unanimously approved a resolution opposing the Valley North Transmission Line. The project calls for a new 765-kilovolt transmission line. The proposed route would extend from West Virginia through Virginia toward Frederick County, Maryland. Valley North is part of the larger Valley Link transmission project. Virginia county officials authorized specialized legal and consulting help to oppose the proposal. A public testimony session is scheduled for Sept. 16 at James Wood High School in Virginia.
A neighboring Frederick County is taking a formal stand against a major transmission-line project that could ultimately extend into Frederick County, Maryland.
The Frederick County Board of Supervisors in Virginia unanimously approved a resolution opposing the proposed Valley North Transmission Line, part of the larger Valley Link transmission project. The proposal calls for a new 765-kilovolt transmission line running from West Virginia through Virginia and toward Frederick County, Maryland.
In addition to opposing the project, the Virginia county authorized its county administrator and county attorney to retain specialized legal and consulting services as officials prepare to challenge the proposal. Frederick County, Virginia later highlighted that action through a new information hub created to track major issues including data centers and transmission lines.
The action does not stop the transmission project on its own. Large transmission-line proposals move through state and regional review processes involving route selection, environmental considerations, utility needs and public input.
A public testimony session is scheduled for September 16 from 6 to 10 p.m. at James Wood High School on Apple Pie Ridge Road in Virginia, according to The River 95.3.
For Frederick County, Maryland residents, the significance is that the Valley North proposal is not confined to Virginia. The planned line is part of a broader regional transmission project whose route extends toward Maryland, meaning decisions and opposition developing across state lines could become increasingly relevant locally.
The Virginia Board of Supervisors’ decision also shows that local governments along the proposed corridor are beginning to take formal positions before the project advances further.

This vote does not cancel the transmission line, but it adds formal local-government opposition along the proposed corridor.
For Frederick County, Maryland, the bigger issue is what happens as the project gets closer to the state line. Route decisions, infrastructure impacts and additional regulatory hearings could become increasingly important for residents here as the proposal advances.
