HERE'S WHAT WE KNOW

The book sale runs Saturdays in October from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Resurrection Reformed Church in Burkittsville. More than 150 boxes of donated books are available for the fundraiser, according to the society’s president. A $12 books-by-the-bag sale is planned for Oct. 31, followed by extended opening for Halloween activities.

A historic church in Burkittsville is offering readers a chance to find their next book while helping preserve the building around them.

The South Mountain Heritage Society holds its annual used-book sale each Saturday in October, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Resurrection Reformed Church. The Frederick News-Post reports that the sale is the society’s largest annual fundraiser for maintaining the nearly 200-year-old church.

President, historian and curator Jody Brumage told the newspaper that the group has more than 150 boxes of books for this year’s sale. Donations come largely from local residents, including readers who buy books, bring them back and pick up something new.

The tradition has filled the church’s pews with books for about two decades. Donations have been especially strong since the pandemic, allowing the society to offer a largely refreshed selection each year, according to Brumage.

Mysteries, fiction and history are popular with shoppers. The selection also draws people looking for gardening, nature and craft books. Alongside the books, the society sells puzzles, board games, music and DVDs.

The final Saturday sale falls on Halloween this year. On Oct. 31, customers will be able to fill a brown paper bag with books for $12.

The society also plans to keep the church open later for trick-or-treating that evening, offering candy and inviting children to choose a book for their bags. The supplied report does not specify the evening hours.

For shoppers, the event offers a chance to browse donated finds. For the society, those purchases help support the ongoing care of a historic Burkittsville landmark.

WHAT IT MEANS

Book purchases support maintenance of the historic church. Readers can browse during the Saturday sales, while families have an additional opportunity to visit on Halloween evening.
