FCPS Board to Consider March 10 Student Day Off for Eid al-Fitr
The proposal would make March 10, 2027, a teacher workday. Heather Ridge School and racial equity updates are also on the board’s agenda.

HERE'S WHAT WE KNOW
The proposed calendar change would make March 10, 2027, a teacher workday recognizing Eid al-Fitr, with no classes for students. The existing calendar already includes a May 17, 2027, teacher workday for Eid al-Adha. Heather Ridge School and the Racial Equity Committee are also scheduled to present updates to the board.
Frederick County students could have March 10, 2027, off under a calendar change scheduled for school board discussion Wednesday, according to The Frederick News-Post.
The proposal would designate that date as a teacher workday to recognize Eid al-Fitr, a Muslim holiday. Students would not attend school, while teachers would have a scheduled workday. The change remains a proposal, rather than an approved addition to the calendar.
Board members Karen Yoho, Janie Inglis Monier and Chad King Wilson Sr. supported bringing the request forward, the newspaper reported, citing agenda documents. The calendar approved in February 2025 did not include a closure for Eid al-Fitr.
The existing schedule already provides a teacher workday on May 17, 2027, for Eid al-Adha, another Muslim holiday. Students are scheduled to be off that day.
Recognition of the two holidays has been part of previous board calendar discussions. For the 2027–2028 school year, the board approved a two-hour early dismissal for Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Fitr falls on a Saturday in 2028, according to the report.
The calendar request is one of several items expected at Wednesday’s meeting. FCPS staff will also present an update on Heather Ridge School, which offers an alternative educational setting with additional behavioral and therapeutic support.
That presentation is expected to cover enrollment information, instructional changes, graduate successes and connections with comprehensive middle and high schools. The News-Post cited a September 2025 enrollment figure of 45 students; that figure is historical and should not be read as a current enrollment count.
The board’s Racial Equity Committee is also scheduled to deliver its annual report. The community advisory group will review its previous school-year work, discuss current goals and describe input on board racial equity policies.
Its presentation will also cover findings from an April community resource fair. The committee’s work addresses discrimination, harassment, implicit bias and racial inequities within the school system.
For families planning ahead, the immediate calendar question is whether March 10 becomes a student day off. The proposal’s appearance on the agenda does not by itself change the school schedule.
WHAT IT MEANS
An approved change would affect family schedules and child-care planning. Parents should distinguish the proposed March date from the May teacher workday already included in the calendar.
