HERE'S WHAT WE KNOW

Whitmer and Downey unveiled the improved North Maple Avenue bus stop Aug. 31. The project includes a wooden bench, miniature library and freely available school supplies. Neighbors have donated books and materials, and children have left appreciative notes.

The children opened an old ottoman at their school bus stop hoping to discover something inside. It was empty—but their disappointment gave Taylor Whitmer an idea.

Now the corner outside Whitmer and her wife Lauren Downey’s home on North Maple Avenue in Brunswick has a handmade bench, a miniature library and a storage container stocked with school supplies.

The Frederick News-Post reports that the couple unveiled the project Aug. 31, a few months after moving to Brunswick in May. What began as a way to improve the morning wait has drawn donations and appreciation from across the neighborhood.

The ottoman had been left outside for someone to take. After students asked to sit on it while waiting for the bus, Whitmer let them move it beside a retaining wall. Seeing their reaction to its empty storage compartment made her wish she had put a surprise inside.

Leftover lumber from a fence project provided the next step. Whitmer proposed building a bench, and the idea expanded to include books, supplies and a colorful bus stop sign.

Whitmer handled much of the painting and design, while Downey helped with measurements and construction. Neither had done a public art project like this before.

They started the library with about eight books and encouraged children to help themselves to pencils, notebooks, markers and other materials.

Neighbors soon added books and supplies. The collection now includes adult novels as well as children’s books, and the container has gained learning cards, small toys and puzzles. Children have been exchanging books and leaving notes of thanks.

The couple also added Halloween decorations and handed out seasonal goodie bags. Christmas decorations and further improvements are planned.

For Whitmer and Downey, the project has helped them meet neighbors while giving children a comfortable place to sit and something to explore before school. The small surprise the students once hoped to find has become something the neighborhood helps replenish.

WHAT IT MEANS

The project shows how a small addition to an everyday gathering place can encourage neighbors to connect. Community contributions are helping sustain what began as one couple’s effort to improve the morning wait.
