Middletown and Walkersville girls soccer battle to 1-1 double-overtime tie

Two Frederick County rivals each found one big moment Tuesday night, and neither could find another.
Middletown and Walkersville played to a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods in a wet, drizzly girls soccer matchup.
Walkersville struck first.
Cece Atadika scored off a rebound with about 25 minutes remaining in the first half after senior midfielder Ava Work hit the crossbar.
The Lions controlled possession for much of the game but could not put Middletown away.
With just over six minutes remaining in regulation, Middletown freshman Sophia Caddy delivered the equalizer with a strong left-footed finish.
Neither side scored during two 10-minute overtime periods.
Walkersville finished the night 2-2-1, while Middletown moved to 1-1-1.
Both teams were also playing without important contributors.
Middletown goalkeeper Emily Krichbaum, a University of Oklahoma recruit, did not play while recovering from a medical procedure.
Walkersville was without junior striker Tatiana Fernandes, last season’s leading scorer, because of a lower-body injury suffered before the season.
Middletown coach Rachelle Buhrman praised her team’s resilience after it stayed within striking distance and converted when an opportunity finally arrived.
Walkersville coach Paul Bryan said he could not fault his team’s effort, particularly after creating enough chances to hit the crossbar twice.
Both programs expect to get even stronger if their missing standouts return later in the season.

Walkersville created more sustained pressure, while Middletown showed resilience by converting one of its best late chances.
