Week 4 football features three unbeaten Frederick County teams in major tests
Linganore visits Walkersville in a battle of 3-0 teams, Oakdale travels to unbeaten Damascus and several other Frederick County programs face important Week 4 matchups.
HERE'S WHAT WE KNOW
Linganore and Walkersville are both 3-0. Oakdale and Damascus are both 3-0. Linganore has won 16 straight games. Walkersville’s Taylor Patten has 520 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Oakdale has won all three of its games by large margins. Tuscarora is trying to bounce back from its first loss. Frederick earned its first win last week. MSD enters Saturday 4-0.
Week 4 brings some of the biggest Frederick County football matchups of the young season.
The headliner is a battle of undefeated county teams as Linganore visits Walkersville, while Oakdale travels to unbeaten Damascus in another major test.
Linganore at Walkersville
Both teams enter 3-0.
Walkersville has been one of the county’s most explosive teams, beating Liberty 64-8, South Carroll 50-18 and Urbana 37-8.
Sophomore Taylor Patten has rushed for 520 yards and eight touchdowns through three games.
Linganore enters as the defending Class 3A state champion and has won 16 straight games.
The Lancers beat previously unbeaten Tuscarora 49-7 last week after earlier wins over MERVO and Meade.
Kai Sawi, who played at Walkersville last season, leads Linganore with 341 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
Linganore has won five straight against Walkersville and seven of the last eight.
Oakdale at Damascus
Oakdale and Damascus are also both 3-0.
The Bears return to the site of one of the biggest wins in program history.
In 2018, Oakdale beat Damascus 24-17 in the Class 2A West championship game, snapping Damascus’ 53-game winning streak before going on to win the state championship.
Oakdale has opened this season with blowout wins over St. John’s Catholic Prep, Thomas Johnson and Middletown.
Damascus has been equally dominant against Richard Montgomery, Wootton and Clarksburg.
Frederick at Middletown
Middletown enters 2-1, while Frederick is 1-2.
The Knights will try to avenge last season’s surprising 17-14 loss to the Cadets.
Frederick earned its first win of this season last week against South Hagerstown, giving head coach EJ Wallace his first victory leading his alma mater.
Francis Scott Key at Tuscarora
Tuscarora is 2-1 and looking to respond after a 49-7 loss to Linganore.
The Titans are trying to reach 3-1 for the first time since 2019.
They have won three straight over Francis Scott Key.
Thomas Johnson at South Hagerstown
TJ opened with a win over Catoctin but has since lost consecutive games to Oakdale and North Hagerstown.
The Patriots face a South Hagerstown team that is 0-3 and has lost each game by a wide margin.
Caesar Rodney at St. John’s Catholic Prep
SJCP snapped a 13-game losing streak last week with a 32-29 win over St. Albans.
The Vikings now look for their first winning streak since October 2023.
Brunswick at Smithsburg
Brunswick enters 0-3, while Smithsburg is off to a 3-0 start, its best since 2008.
The Railroaders have beaten Smithsburg five straight times despite their current struggles.
Urbana at South River
Urbana is looking to rebound from a 37-8 loss to Walkersville in which the Hawks committed 12 penalties for 120 yards and threw three interceptions.
They face a South River team that has lost two straight.
Catoctin at Boonsboro
Catoctin is 0-3 and trying to snap a six-game losing streak against Boonsboro.
The Warriors have won two straight since losing to Middletown in Week 1.
Coventry Christian at Maryland School for the Deaf
MSD enters 4-0.
Senior quarterback Ryker Pedersen has rushed for 501 yards and seven touchdowns, making him the second-leading rusher in Frederick County according to the source material.
The Orioles are seeking their fifth straight win over Coventry Christian.
WHAT IT MEANS
Week 4 should begin separating the county’s early contenders from the rest of the field.
The Linganore-Walkersville and Oakdale-Damascus games carry the biggest stakes, while several other programs are trying to stop losing streaks or build momentum before the season reaches its midpoint.
