Frederick boys soccer rolls 9-0 as set pieces fuel another strong performance
The Cadets scored three times off set-piece opportunities and got goals from seven different players in a dominant road win over St. John’s Catholic Prep.

Frederick High’s boys soccer team has found one of its biggest offensive weapons in a place it struggled to capitalize on in recent seasons: set pieces.
The Cadets scored three times from those opportunities Monday and rolled to a 9-0 road win over St. John’s Catholic Prep, improving to 3-2.
Senior Jose Vasquez Lopez has become a key part of that approach, regularly delivering corners and free kicks into dangerous areas where Frederick can attack second balls, deflections and aerial chances.
Coach Jarron Brooks said the difference this season has been the willingness of more players to aggressively attack those deliveries rather than simply wait for the ball to find them.
That improvement was already visible in one of Frederick’s biggest results of the young season.
The Cadets recently beat two-time defending Class 1A state finalist Brunswick 2-1, with the comeback beginning on a corner-kick goal.
Senior defender Carlos Rodriguez said Frederick has intentionally emphasized being stronger in aerial challenges and more disciplined about positioning on set pieces.
Monday’s game showed how dangerous that can become when combined with depth.
Frederick had seven different goal scorers in the 9-0 win.
Modou Ngum and Hugo Rivas each scored twice, while Rodriguez, Anderson Mendoza, Junior Ayala, Miles Poska and Jaiden Huacache each added one goal.
Mendoza recorded two assists, while Rodriguez and Vasquez Lopez each had one.
The Cadets are now already more than halfway toward matching their 2025 win total of five.
Brooks said the team’s ability is there, but the next step is maintaining a team-first approach and continuing to build consistency.
WHAT IT MEANS
Frederick’s offense is becoming more dangerous because it does not have to rely solely on creating chances through open play.
Corners and free kicks are now producing goals, and the Cadets are putting more players into dangerous scoring positions.
That gives Frederick another way to beat teams when open-play chances are limited and could make the Cadets a much tougher opponent as the season progresses.
