Located near the mouth of the Little Choptank River, James Island had diminished to a small spit of land due to ongoing erosion. According to a report by Maryland Matters, the project aims to rebuild and protect the island by reusing sediment removed during routine maintenance of local navigation waterways.
The beneficial reuse effort turns material dredged from shipping channels into new habitat and coastal protection. Once completed, the rebuilt island is expected to provide environmental benefits and land stabilization along Maryland's Eastern Shore.
